Brackish Experts is seeking an Adjunct Professor to teach the Theater Security Decision Making course for the Naval War College’s College of Distance Education Fleet Seminar Program (FSP) in San Diego, CA . FSP is a seminar-based curriculum taught in-person to students at Naval bases and stations and consists of one 3-hour class per week during the academic year (September through May).
The “Theater Security Decision Making” (TSDM) course educates Naval War College (NWC) students in contemporary security studies at both the strategic and the theater-strategic levels. In support of this primary objective, the department develops core curricula and provides graduate-level interdisciplinary instruction in the primary areas of international relations and regional security studies, foreign policy analysis, and U.S. foreign policy as they are influenced by strategic planning and selection of future military forces; their potential use along with other tools of national power; the nature of economic, political, organizational, and behavioral factors that affect decision making on national security issues; the role and impact of individual leaders; and, the use of expanded critical thinking and analytic skills to formulate and assess strategies and policies to achieve desired outcomes within complex national security organizations.
TSDM Adjunct Faculty Qualifications: Required qualifications include an advanced degree in one or more of the following areas: International Affairs, International Relations, Management, or a related field; and demonstrated experience working in the national security and defense environments. Preferred qualifications include: an earned Ph.D. in one of the academic fields noted above; teaching experience at the graduate level; academic program management experience; graduation from a U.S. military senior- or intermediate-level Service College and JPME I and/or II certification; military Service College teaching experience; experience and competence in internet-based instruction; and distance learning experience at the graduate level. The Adjunct Professor must be a U.S. citizen and be capable of obtaining and maintaining a Department of Defense Secret security clearance.
TSDM Adjunct Faculty Functions: Teach the TSDM course at the Intermediate Service College level with duties including: conducting classroom and online instruction; reviewing and evaluating student essays, examinations, and other written and verbal assessments; developing curricula; performing various types of service to the College; traveling to, and lecturing at, nonresident seminars around the country as required; and performing educational administrative functions as required.
New adjunct professors can expect to:
1) Submit a CV, participate in a Zoom interview with the College of Distance Education Department Head, and onboard with Brackish Experts as a part-time employee.
2) Serve as an Associate Fleet Professor through May 2024 to observe the course being taught by current TSDM Adjunct Professors and to gain familiarity with the curriculum and learning management system of record. Associate Fleet Professor is a paid position.
3) Participate in a faculty development workshop with the College of Distance Education’s National Security Affairs Department Chair in July/August 2024. The workshop is a paid event.
4) Teach the TSDM course as a full Adjunct Professor starting Academic Year 2025-2026 (September 2024-May 2026). The course consists of one 3-hour, in-person, class each week throughout the academic year. Adjunct Professor is a paid position.
