Building Inspector
Summary:
Performs responsible technical work in the enforcement of all adopted building codes. Primary duties include inspecting new building construction, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, gas, and other similar installations. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by conferences, oral/written reports, and results obtained.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Conducts field inspections of work in progress or completed under approved building permits for conformance with all adopted codes.
•Performs Fire Safety Inspections.
•Issues Notices of Violations for non-conformance and re-inspects when deficiencies are corrected. Consults with architects, engineers, general and specialty contractors, and home owners.
•Investigates complaints regarding alleged code violations, determines the validity of the claims, and suggests remedial action.
•Reviews applications for permits, competency, and occupational licenses.
•Maintains records of inspections made and makes reports to recommendations.
•Assists in the prosecution of violators of the code and gathers witnesses and evidence.
•Investigates contractors, electricians, and plumbers to ascertain that they have the proper qualification certificates.
•Advises City staff on building and facilities construction and maintenance activities.
•Participates in on-call and after-hours duties as assigned. Must be available for overtime and emergency call-outs when necessary.
•Assists in preparation for, response to, and recovery from, the impacts of a wide variety of disasters or emergency situations and may be temporarily assigned to other duties, locations, and shifts.
•Meets attendance requirements.
•Promotes positive customer service environment internally and externally.
•Performs other job related functions as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent recognized certificate is required with preference given for Associate's Degree, supplemented by five (5) years combined experience in the field of construction or building inspections, or demonstrates a combination of postsecondary education and experience that totals two (2) years with at least three (3) years of such experience in construction or building inspection, or an equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience.
Qualification Requirements:

•Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
•Must possess a State of Florida license as one (1) & two (2) Family Inspector, Fire Inspector and at least one (1) commercial license, or ability to obtain within one year. Possession of licenses as Building, Electrical, Plumbing and/or Mechanical Inspector given preference.
•Knowledge of all types of building construction materials and methods and stages in construction when possible violations and defects may most easily be observed and corrected.
•Knowledge of pertinent laws and regulations pertaining to electrical construction and repairs, mechanical and plumbing codes, and building and zoning codes and related laws and ordinances.
•Knowledge of the proper (accepted) terminology used in the performance of the work assigned.
•Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work assigned.
•Ability to detect structural and other faults and to appraise for quality of construction and physical depreciation.
•Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints quickly and accurately, and to compare them with construction in progress.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and consult with building owners, contractors, and the general public. Ability to enforce regulations with firmness and tact.
•Ability to exercise judgment in evaluation situations and making decisions.
•Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
