SUMMARY


Responsible for leading, planning and overseeing all financial and fiscal management aspects of the organization's operations. Provide leadership and coordination in the information technology, continuous improvement, business planning, accounting and budgeting, and financial investments of the organization. Direct, with overall responsibility for, internal controls, forecasts, financial reporting, financial planning, compliance and budgetary controls as well as treasury management and banking. Leads team of accounting, IT, and continuous improvement staff to reach organizational goals and provide excellent internal and external customer service. Performance of the following duties is done personally or through subordinate staff.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is not all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversee the preparation and control of the organization's budgets and forecasts, in alignment with strategic plans. Interpret operating results as they affect the financial aspects of the organization and make specific recommendations for cost reduction, revenue enhancement and surplus improvement.
  • Develop and analyze statistical and accounting information in order to appraise operating results in terms of financial position, performance against budget or forecast, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.
  • Establish effective budgeting systems and reporting mechanisms for operating and capital needs.
  • Serve as an active and engaged member of the Senior Leadership Team. Participate in key decisions pertaining to strategic initiatives and operational execution.
  • Provide financial information and support to management and the Board in the formulation and execution of strategic plans and objectives for the organization. Create long range financial plans for fulfilling operating and capital budget needs based on strategic plans and initiatives.
  • Ensure financial statements are prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and oversee the preparation of the annual audit and the Form 990.
  • Ensure Charity Navigator, Guidestar and Cleveland Better Business Bureau are updated annually with the most up to date information.
  • Ensure effective financial and information technology internal controls for the organization. Continually evaluate established policies and procedures, and update or modify them as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance and accurate reporting with the food bank's Regulatory/Compliance Reporting Policy, and the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accounting.
  • Complete financial analyses of organizational cash flow, investment strategies, banking relationships, debt management, etc. Develop and implement improvements as necessary.
  • Provide strategic staff support for the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board.
  • Work directly with the Finance Committee to develop and maintain effective Investment Policies for all investments and continuously monitor and review investment performance. Maintain primary responsibility for relationship with external Investment Manager(s) to ensure that the organization's investments are managed in accordance with those policies and that Committee and Board reporting and information needs are met.
  • Work with the Audit Committee and our auditors to ensure a thorough annual auditing process and that they have the information they need to oversee compliance.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with banking, insurance, and non-organizational personnel in order to facilitate financial activities.
  • Ensure that the organization's professional reputation is maintained. Ensure appropriate levels of confidentiality regarding the organization's operations.
  • Provide overall leadership and supervision to the Accounting and Information Technology departments and ensure sufficient back-up or succession.
  • Maintain required job knowledge, skills, and core professional competencies. Attend and participate in required educational programs and staff meetings.
  • Act as a resource to the Feeding America network and seek out best practices from other food banks.
  • Actively support and champion initiatives aimed at driving continuous improvement throughout the organization. May participate in one of the following: LEAN council, a kaizen, 5S campaign or other process improvement efforts to support continuous improvement and improved processes within the food bank.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities


Directly supervises two supervisory employees; Director of Information Technology and Controller. Total staff of 10+. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving issues.

Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or Business Management. MBA preferred. CPA preferred. Ten or more years of high-level accounting experience. Five or more years of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous accounting experience with a nonprofit or public accounting firm preferred. Thorough knowledge of financial and accounting practices and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles. Four to five years of management experience required. Physical Requirements and Environment


The physical requirements for this position include: Ability to frequently remain in a stationary position. Ability to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. frequently. Ability to operate a computer or other office productivity machinery constantly. Occasional ability to ascend/descend stairs to access workspaces. Ability to position or move body to access filing cabinets or other work equipment frequently. Ability to constantly exchange accurate information and communicate in person or via telephone with clients, partners, donors, coworkers and other members of the community. Must be able to constantly view a computer screen. Ability to move office equipment/supplies on seldom occasions. Ability to lift up to 10 lbs on a regular basis. Travel is seldom required for this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
