Position Description
A Heavy Equipment Operator’s primary responsibility is to complete assigned tasks safely and accurately using construction equipment. Typical Heavy Equipment Operator job duties include:
Loading and unloading equipment from vehicles used to transport it
Position Requirements
Essential Functions of the Position:
Operator must be able to document all hazards and explain hazards to visitors to job site.
Must be able to obtain DOT check list and heavy equipment check list, performing a 360 degree walk around of equipment. Must look for any abnormalities, document on DOT, check list report to supervisor so they can repair. Walk around consists of checking fluids, tires, grease points, lights and safety supplies, first aid kits, fire extinguisher and tools.
Reports any findings on the DVIR and communicates to their supervisor the findings before leaving yard.
Evaluates equipment throughout the work day and insures that equipment is in safe operating condition.
If the equipment is not in safe operating condition; communicates Red Tag issues to supervisor immediately.
Completes JSA, CW and power line avoidance forms.
Designates where spotter will stand and spot during searches (multiple spots may apply depending on job site obstacles and wind direction). Always knows where spotter is while working.
Sets cones for site delineation.
Stays 3 ft. away from obstacles when cutting or getting near obstacles
Stays 15 ft. away from power lines, power poles, panel boxes and wires
Determines normal travel path for equipment movement through sites
Operator must be able to work unsupervised and be responsible to take breaks and lunch at specific times. Operators need to be trusted to complete tasks in a safe and timely fashion.
