Job Description

Who We Are

Westward Builders is a full-service residential contractor based in Portland, Oregon. We specialize in architecturally driven projects and high-performance custom homes for discerning clients. Our work is rooted in craftsmanship, collaboration, and a commitment to delivering excellence at every phase of construction. We’re a tight-knit team of builders who take pride in creating beautiful, lasting spaces with precision and integrity.

About the Position

We are currently seeking a  Lead Carpenter to join our growing team. This is a key field leadership role for a highly skilled, hands-on carpenter who can think critically, solve problems, and lead by example. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, versatile across multiple trades, and capable of managing both tasks and people in a professional and efficient manner.

As a Lead Carpenter, you’ll be expected to take ownership of the day-to-day execution of projects—working closely with project managers, subcontractors, and other team members to ensure that work is completed to our exacting standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret construction documents and plan sets to organize and lead daily work on site
  • Collaborate with project managers to estimate labor needs and assist in material take-offs
  • Execute a broad range of carpentry tasks, including framing, siding, windows, doors, cabinetry, and finish trim
  • Perform minor trade work as needed (e.g., demolition, light concrete, drywall, flooring, painting) to support schedule and project goals
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with subcontractors and trade partners to ensure quality and alignment with project specs
  • Maintain job site safety, cleanliness, and organization at all times
  • Mentor and guide less experienced carpenters and apprentices
  • Proactively identify and troubleshoot construction issues in the field
  • Ensure all work meets Westward Builders’ standards of craftsmanship and code compliance

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Lead Carpenter or Foreman in residential construction
  • Strong understanding of architectural details, construction sequencing, and high-performance building practices
  • Skilled in both rough and finish carpentry
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical documents
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with tools and equipment, and a commitment to job site safety
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently or as part of a small, high-performing team
  • Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in a variety of conditions
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license required
  • Experience working on architect-designed or custom homes is a strong plus

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience and leadership skills
  • Paid time off and flexible scheduling
  • Bonus pay opportunities based on performance
  • A supportive and respectful team culture
  • The opportunity to work on some of Portland’s most thoughtfully designed homes
  • A long-term career path with a company that values quality, professionalism, and integrity
