Job Description

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids. We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house, from motor coils to AI, reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and be rewarded based on merit. We are seeking a Materials Lab Engineer with a passion for polymers, textiles, chemistry, or chemical engineering to join our team. This role is ideal for an inventive, hands-on researcher eager to take innovative material concepts from the lab bench to real-world applications in humanoid robots. You will help pioneer new material formulations from identifying cutting-edge raw materials to creating processes that yield unique performance characteristics. You will collaborate closely with senior researchers in materials science, physics, mechanical and electrical engineering, and industrial design to develop materials that enable safe, dexterous humanoid robots manufactured at high volumes. Key Responsibilities Identify, evaluate, and develop novel raw materials to formulate polymers, composites, textiles, and hybrid material stacks with potential to unlock breakthrough capabilities. Develop and optimize material compositions and processing techniques including fiber processing, thermoforming, molding, calendering, laminating, and coating. Design and execute lab experiments to measure mechanical, thermal, chemical, and environmental performance. Work cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, and industrial design teams to ensure new materials meet demanding application requirements. Collaborate on transitioning lab-scale processes to high volume manufacturing within our state-of-the-art production facilities. Stay at the forefront of polymer science, smart materials, and textile engineering to continually expand our materials palette. Required Qualifications PhD in Polymers, Textiles, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering , or related field. 0–2 years of post-academic industry experience (including internships, postdocs, or direct employment). Strong understanding of polymer chemistry, textile engineering, or composite materials. Hands-on experience with laboratory formulation, processing, testing and characterization techniques. Comfort working across disciplines and rapidly iterating from concept to prototype. First-principles thinker who excels at rapid problem-solving and thrives under tight deadlines. Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with a demanding, fast-moving team. Nice to Have Experience integrating electronics into soft or flexible materials. Familiarity with additive manufacturing or fiber-based processes. Location Policy We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations. At 1X your work and results will be rewarded with a total rewards package consisting of a base salary, stock options and benefits. Base salary range is $115,000 to $185,000 + equity. Your actual salary will be based on your knowledge, skills and experience. We're excited to get to know you and the prospects of having you on board! #J-18808-Ljbffr 1X Technologies AS
