Prison Education, Adult Education Teacher with Special Education Focus at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution (HRYCI) Reports to: Teacher/Supervisor of Level 5 Prison Description of Position: The Adult Education Teacher is a member of the Institution’s Prison Education Program that delivers an array of instructional services to Level 5 offenders while preparing them for a successful reentry into the community. This position focuses on work with students with special needs to support successful completion of individualized education plans. Major Responsibilities Provide individualized academic instruction that addresses the unique educational needs of students with special needs. Support delivery of the Groves High School curriculum and the completion of high school graduation requirements for students with special needs. Work closely with the teacher/supervisor, educational diagnostician and other IEP team members to deliver instruction and services as contained in IEPs. Model “best practices” based on current research in the field of Adult Education. Maintain data and complete federal and state reports for assigned learners. Participate on IEP teams as needed and deliver services tailored to the unique needs of students with special needs throughout the institution. Ensure that federal and/or state policies and procedures are followed in the classroom including but are not limited to WIA/WIOA – Title II, Perkins/Vocational, ADA/504 and/or IDEA. Integrate re-entry information and academic instruction to prepare students for a successful transition to their communities. Work cooperatively with the Department of Correction to promote adult education opportunities upon the request of the Teacher/Supervisor, Prison Education. Function as part of an adult education services team to transition inmates into the community. Perform other duties as assigned by the Teacher/Supervisor, Prison Education. Education Must possess current Delaware Licensure (14 DE Admin Code 1500-Professional Standards Board) and current Delaware Certification in Special Education and at least one content area on the high school level. Experience Minimum of 3 years (full-time) academic teaching, experience in adult and/or correctional setting preferred. Skills Excellent written and oral communication, facilitation, and organizational skills, as well as excellent listening and synthesizing skills. Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and negotiating skills. Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ability to perform responsibilities with minimal supervision. Capable of setting priorities and working in collaboration with others and working under pressure. Be able to proactively problem-solve with professionalism. Discretion and confidentiality are essential. Salary Salary Range: $68,845 - $118,690 annually. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate’s education and experience in accordance with the Department of Education’s compensation policy. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, participation in the state retirement program, annual, sick, and personal leave, and supplemental benefits options. Direct deposit of payroll checks is a condition of state employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made after approximately one month of employment.
