Job Summary

Join the mission-driven team at the Public Health Laboratory (PHL) to promote and protect the health of all Minnesotans.

The Environmental Section of the Minnesota Department of Health, within the Public Health Laboratory Division, is seeking a supervisor within the Data Quality Unit. The Data Quality Unit is responsible for ensuring the quality of the data generated by the Environmental Section. The principal responsibilities of this position include:
  • Supervising and assuring the work of the Data Quality Unit is completed and conducted with quality and timeliness.
  • Reviewing the data generated by the Environmental Laboratory Section to ensure it meets all quality assurance requirements.
  • Conducting internal audits and other quality assurance activities in coordination with section quality assurance officer, section manager, and unit supervisors.
  • Hire, train, direct, and evaluate unit staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in the physical, natural, or biological sciences.

Two (2) years of experience conducting laboratory analyses in an analytical or research program in environmental chemistry.

Demonstrated leadership in one of the following:
  • Experience as a supervisor, team lead, lead worker, OR project lead
  • Completion of a State leadership development program, such as Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) or Senior Leadership Institute (SLI)
  • Completion of similar or equivalent leadership development program through another organization
  • A paid or unpaid position leading a program or chairing a committee, such as an Employee Resource Group (ERG). This experience must include: 1+ years identifying issues, goals, and strategic actions, AND 100+ hour/year time commitment.

Minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process:
  • Knowledge of procedures involved in planning, executing, evaluating and reporting analytical chemistry data.
  • Ability to organize, execute and evaluate research activities independently and to correlate findings from a variety of scientific disciplines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in chemistry, physical, natural, or biological sciences.
  • Four or more years of experience conducting laboratory analyses in an analytical or research program in environmental sciences.
  • Two or more years of experience supervising or coordinating a team.
  • Experience with quality assurance programs such as EPA and/or ISO 17025.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems.
Additional Requirements
  • Must successfully pass a background and reference check.
  • Under U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services regulations, the successful candidate must be able to accept work in the U.S. by the day employment begins. This agency is unable to offer H-1B sponsorship.
